I call Korea to talk to the future
Here are some of the things I've learned about Korea:
1. It is popularly believed that personality is determined by blood type. When I ask what O positive means for me, my students all reply "O+ is like you."
2. The natural remedy for a fainting spell is piercing the thumb with a needle.
3. There are four separate "Valentine's Days" - Valentine's Day, when women buy chocolate for men; White Day, when men buy chocolate for women (or "jewelry and handbags" to really impress them); Rose Day, when men buy roses for women; and Black Day, when single people eat black noodles in Chinese restaurants alone.
4. There is also a holiday for cookies called Pepero Day. It happens every year on November 11th because Pepero cookie-sticks resemble the 1s in 11/11.
Additional facts:
5. There is an expression for waiting that goes like "waiting like a giraffe." I don't understand this one.
6. Japan is building/has built a sort of colony in the Korean countryside to be populated entirely by Japanese nationals. This is probably bad.
7. If you have friends who are older than you are, it is inappropriate to call them "friends." Instead you should call them "elder brothers/sisters." In this case, I have approximately zero friends but a massive family.
I'm losing more of my favorite students every day. Make time stop.
